hi michele!
i realize that it can be hard to get to a studio, but if you live here in LA, you have no excuse -- there are so many great yoga studios around town, one of which is probably closer to you than you think!
my point is that as a beginner, you owe it to yourself to take an intro series of beginner level classes just so that you learn the proper alignment and breathing techniques. once you have that down, you can follow along with a book, a video, or even a podcast and know that there'll be a good chance that you're doing the poses correctly. there are free yoga classes all over town, and as long as you tell the teacher that you're a beginner, if he/she is any good, he/she will keep an eye on you to make sure you don't hurt yourself.
good luck, and enjoy! -- joni
I'm a mom of two, and wife of almost a decade. I've been writing online since 1995 (back when notepad and ftp'ing was key.) In other words, I'm a dinosaur. I own my own Virtual Assistant company.
